Locals are invited to join in the celebrations of the 75th Anniversary of the Chin National Day in Sunshine.
Chin National Day commemorates the General Assembly of Chinland which was held on February, 20 1948, and saw more than 500 Chin representatives from across the Chin State in western Myanmar voting to adopt a modern democratic governing system over the traditional feudal system.
Western Melbourne Chin Community Secretary and event organiser Robert Sang said currently there are approximately 10,000 Chin people living in Victoria, with half of them living in the West.
“This is a very important cultural for the Chin people,” he said.
“Every year on February 20 we celebrate the national day in our own way.”
Mr Sang said this year the event will bring the Chin people from the east and west together.
“All the Chin people are bought together to promote a sense of identity, culture, tradition, unity, and diversity,” he said.
“Everyone is welcome to come and witness the vibrant culture of the Chin people.”
Locals will be able to enjoy cultural dances and songs, traditional costumes in a fashion show/ presentation, children’s face painting and craft, Chin traditional wrestling, and traditional food stalls.
The event is taking place on February 18 between 11:00am – 6:00pm at the Kevin Wheelahan Gardens in Sunshine.
