Circuit racing could be back at the Calder Park Raceway for the first time in more than two decades.
Having held its last circuit race in 2001, there has been limited use of the raceway since for drag and drift racing.
That could change later this year with the final round of the Victorian State Race Series scheduled at the track on the weekend of October 27.
The calendar said that racing at Calder Park is subject to a track licence being granted.
VSRS board chair Paul Zsidy confirmed that they were hoping to get the go ahead to have circuit racing back at Calder Park.
“We would love to see racing on that track, it’s part of the motor scene in Melbourne’s history,” he said.
“Most of the motor tracks are at least an hour out of town, this is right on our doorstep.
“I can’t wait to see motorsport back at Calder Park.”
Zsidy said the reaction so far had been really positive, with a lot of old motorsport fans keen to get back to the track.
He said they were hoping it would help develop a new breed of motorsport fans as well.
“The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive,” he said. “A lot of people remember racing at the track and are high fiving at the thought of it being back.
“For the young generation, they’ve only seen it in the media. Everyone is excited by the prospect of racing at Calder Park.”
The race return to Calder Park hinges on Motorsport Australia issuing a track license.
Zsidy said he believed that the track owner, Rodney Jane had already been in touch with Motorsport Australia to see what is needed to get the licence.
He applauded the Jane family for wanting to get circuit racing back to the area.
He said he hoped that the local community would get behind the return of racing.
“It’s a positive outlet for motor racing enthusiasts to go and enjoy their toys,” he said.
“Motorsport brings a lot of money into the community. Hopefully the community will embrace it being back there.”
