UPDATE: Homicide squad detectives have charged a man with murder following a stabbing death in a Chinatown carpark.
Fai Sing Yiu, 59, was remanded in custody after facing an out-of-sessions hearing in the early hours of Thursday morning. His application for bail was refused.
Police charged Mr Sing Yiu, from Forest Hill, with one count of murder.
Investigators allege he stabbed 64-year-old Alan Wong in the Golden Square carpark, near the corner of Little Bourke and Swanston streets, on Wednesday afternoon.
Police said the two men met at a restaurant in Chinatown before leaving together and arguing in the nearby carpark.
Emergency services were called to the carpark at about 12.40pm after reports a man had been stabbed. The victim was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with wounds to his upper body, but died a short time later.
Mr Sing Yiu, who suffered from a stab wound to his hand, was arrested and taken for questioning.
Detective Senior Constable Emma Kerry said during questioning Mr Sing Yiu admitted causing the injuries to Mr Wong, but claimed to have done so in self-defence.
Mr Sing Yiu has been remanded in custody and will appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.
