Reconnecting in the garden

As the world reconnects after years of pandemic isolation, CommUnity+ is helping to re-engage the Deer Park Community through a community garden.

The community agency recently hosted a seed planting event at the , where the garden will be located.

About 30 attendees from the community met and enjoyed afternoon tea and began planning their vision for the space.

Neighbourhood house and CommUnity+ community engagement manager Emma Price said the event was a result of liaising with residents in their Neighbourhood House program.

“It’s really exciting coming out of what has been two pretty terrible years and people being really isolated,” she said.

“People are just so excited and enthusiastic about the potential and I think that for us in the community centre it’s really rewarding and really empowering to help us know that this is what the community wants.

“We have a really amazing community in Deer Park, working with the community is really easy because they’re so fantastic.”

Ms Price said the garden is being set up with the assistance of the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, who will be supporting the garden through their horticultural nursery program and the donation of seedlings for the garden.

The space offered by the Hunt Club already has raised garden beds in lance, which Ms Price said is not only great for growing, but also good for community gardeners who may have mobility issues.

CommUnity+ is still calling for any Deer Park community members interested in helping to plan, shape and be part of the community garden.

There are three upcoming garden meetups people can head along to on November 25, December 9, and January 13.
