Derrimut brewery beer can best in Australia

A Derrimut brewery’s graphic talents were recognised recently when the can it designed for its spicy and sour craft beer was awarded the best in Australia.

Cavalier Brewery, in Derrimut Drive, Derrimut, took out the Orora Golden Can Trophy beating a field of 152 Australian craft breweries at this year’s GABS Can Design Awards, announced on October 21.

Can designer and Cavalier Brewery co-owner Jason Burton said the can’s vibrant design of a traditional Mexican sugar skull was taken from the event it represented, the Dia de Los Muertos or the Day of the Dead celebration, in Mexico.

“The festival, it’s a celebration of life and death,” he said.

“It’s bright and colourful as much as it is about celebrating the day.”

Mr Burton said he worked with an American illustrator to create the skull image painted in vibrant brown, red, orange and yellow colours and adorned with flowers and a headband.

He said the design, that merged Mexican and Australian cultures, had to be eye-catching in order to stand out among ”a sea” of other beers on the market.

Mr Burton, 40, of Altona North, said his award-winning design was for the brewery’s “Bloody Maria Imperial Gose Michelada” beer which merged the Mexican cocktails the Bloody Maria and the Michelada and was a customer favourite.

Also recognised at the awards was the neighbouring Hop Nation Brewing Co, in Whitehall Street, Footscray, who came in third in the Victorian Top Designs category

for its “Walk Between Raindrops” beer can design.
