Brimbank council has approved a draft vision for the future of Alfrieda Street in St Albans from Main Road East to Taylors Road.
At its meeting on Tuesday, October 18, the council endorsed the Draft Alfrieda Street Master Plan for a four-week public consultation period.
The draft Master Plan included the whole street from Main Road East to Taylors Road and has outlined plans across three distinct sections: the Civic Walk in the south, the Nature Walk in the
centre and the Neighbourhood Walk in the north.
The draft plan has also outlined two options for the Civic Walk section with distinct plans for where the public realm or space used for community gatherings, events and markets would be positioned.
Brimbank councillor Jae Papalia said the master plan would be a “game-changer” for the St Albans community.
“It’s a green spine connecting major community destinations while promoting active lifestyle and connection to nature,” she said.
Cr Papalia said the plan outlined widened streets to allow for trading and special events to take place.
“We already see the vibrant community in St Albans celebrating things like Lunar New Year and this is just going to really accelerate those celebrations,” she said.
Cr Virginia Tachos said the plan aimed to make the footpaths more user-friendly.
“There is no doubt that Alfrieda Street is one of the most iconic streets in St Albans, but it has faced many ongoing challenges over the years – illegal double parking, exposed shopping strips, concrete jungle, illegal dumping in the back alleys, footpaths that are not user friendly,” she said.
“It doesn’t take much to create congestion on those footpaths.
“We want it to look like an inviting, exciting vibe with a lot of greenery that still retains its unique vibe of the edgy public realm that it has.
“It’s important that we get this right.”
Consultation on the Draft Alfrieda Street Master Plan will commence on Monday, November 7 and close on Friday, December 2.
