Brimbank council has supported the establishment of a community garden at Parmelia Drive Reserve in Taylors Lakes.
The Taylors Lakes Lions Club received a $34,000 commitment to help establish the garden next to the Remus Way Kindergarten through the state government’s Our Suburbs: Living Local Fund program.
At its meeting on Tuesday, October 19, Brimbank council approved a motion to support the initiative, subject to the formalisation of a Memorandum of Understanding agreement between the council and the Taylors Lakes Lions Club detailing a number of requirements, including installing two-metre high black plastic transparent fencing.
Brimbank councillor Bruce Lancashire said the garden would benefit a number of community groups and individuals across the Taylors Lakes area.
“We are very fortunate in this council to have groups such as the Taylors Lakes Lions Club, who do amazing work for our community,” he said.
“This latest Lions Club project to establish a community garden proposal at Parmelia Drive Reserve is a fantastic idea.”
Cr Ranka Rasic said she was interested to see what the garden would include to support the community.
“I think we should listen to community and what they want to see there,” she said.
Other requirements outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding would include an ecological survey and a potable water supply.
