Fraser MHR Daniel Mulino joined Brimbank’s mayor Jasmine Nguyen and councillors in getting their hands dirty on Monday when they planted a tree to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
Some 20 trees have been planted along Glengala Rd, in Sunshine West, as part of the council’s Creating Streets for People program. The tree planting was funded by a federal Department of Industry’s $10,000 grant.
To encourage residents to walk or cycle to local activities, the council has also increased footpath widths, improved pedestrian crossings over side roads that connect with Glengala Rd and built a pocket park.
The federal government said it was pleased to support Brimbank Council’s efforts to increase green spaces and turn the popular shopping strip into a boulevard.
Queen Elizabeth II has been on the throne since 1952. The 96-year-old monarch has visited Australia 16 times during her reign.
