Time-twisting tales set for the stage

From a prince looking to kill his father to claim the throne to characters searching for love through time and space, Western Edge Youth Arts’ newest work is a unique beast as it combines the work of three Edge Ensembles theatre groups.

The Footscray, Wyndham and St Albans ensembles are combining their separate works which they developed for 15 weeks to create ‘Distortion’, a story combining time travel and curses to tell a story of power and greed.

Western Edge co-artistic director John Marc Desengano said the Edge Ensembles groups combines young people from across the west and allowed them to write and produce their own theatre pieces.

“This program is called Edge Ensembles for good reason, as we believe strongly in the power of community and collaboration, and our participants discover the true meaning of what it is to be part of an ensemble,” he said.

“These are their stories, their creative genius and their program.”

Footscray Edge Ensembles lead artist Chala Mohamed, who is also a participant in the Collective-In-Training program, said taking part in an Edge Ensembles is contributing to his development.

“It’s actually helped me become a stronger actor,” he said.

Western Edge Youth Arts will present ‘Distortion’ at the The Bowery Theatre from 7pm to 8:30pm on Saturday, September 17.
