Mental health reforms to centre lived experience

The state government has launched a new workforce initiative to prioritise lived experience in the mental health sector, in an effort to transform Victoria’s mental health and wellbeing system including those in Brimbank.

The new $11.45 million Lived and Living Experience Workforce Development program will offer training, supervision, practice and organisational support, ongoing education and career pathways centred on lived experience.

The program is in response to a recommendation from the Royal Commission to better include lived experience in Victoria’s mental health system, to better meet the needs of those living with mental illness, drug and alcohol issues.

The program will be led by nine Victorian agencies.

Victorian Mental Health minister Gabrielle Williams said a highly skilled mental health workforce with their own experience in the system meant better treatment, care and support for all Victorians.

“Listening to the feedback of people with lived experience and then acting on those recommendations is critical in achieving better experiences and outcomes for Victorians with mental illness.”
