In response to the Sunshine College Ardeer campus fires, The Department of Education (DET) and Training will continue to demolish the site and it is intended to be repurposed for public use.

A spokesperson for the DET told Star Weekly “Demolition works are already under way at the site of the former Ardeer Campus of Sunshine College. The fire at the site on Saturday (July 23) affected the one building remaining to be demolished.

“Victoria Police are investigating this fire. As soon as the contractor gains police clearance, they will complete demolition work on the final building.

“Post demolition, the land will be reinstated as open space and the site will be accessible by the general public for recreational purposes, pending its future reactivation for education use.”

Residents seem to be fed up with the ongoing fires as they continue happening on a regular basis.

Louise is a local resident who lives close by to the school and has seen it lit up many times now, she noted that there is often security on scene there to supervise the area but as soon as they are not on duty a fire seems to occur.

“It’s been going on for months, although there is only one building still standing just as the recent fires have destroyed it,

As for the effect on the families it’s actually sad that when we heard the sirens we immediately looked at each other and knew it was a blaze again,” said Louise.

The original date for the school to be demolished was set at Thursday, June 30th and at this stage a new expected completion date has not been noted.
