The colourful fish on Sun Crescent in Sunshine have made a return recently and the colourful creatures seem to have caused a stir throughout the community.
Local Sunshine resident Nicki Kazantzis-Avramidis has lived in Sunshine her whole life and would have preferred something else,
“I find it looks like something you’d have in a playground. I would rather they clean the streets up, do the fascias of the shops, get rid of the rubbish and litter and add in more greenery,
“Back in the 70s and 80s it had so much nostalgia, class and character and we’re missing that now with a lot of rubbish that’s being dumped.”
Acting Director, Infrastructure & City Services from Brimbank council, Tom Razmovski confirmed the fish were originally painted in 2013 with the recent restoration to tie in with the new pocket park on the corner of Sun Crescent and Watt Street in Sunshine.
“The works were funded by the State Government to help create more vibrant shopping precincts through temporary activations.
“Local residents and traders were informed of the works in April. Council is yet to receive direct feedback from the local community, and welcomes it on the future viability of such initiatives through Report It, YourSay, and other channels,” said Mr Razmovski
Derek Farquhar who has lived and worked around the Sunshine area since 2017 feels the fish are an improvement to the streetscape, no matter the negative feedback it may come with.
“Any attempt no matter how small is a step in the right direction for them, there’s a split between ‘what a waste of money’ and ‘it’s an improvement,’ if you get that split with anything then I think you’ve hit the right mark.”
“There’s quite a few things happening around the area into Sun Crescent, a light installation and a pocket garden… There’s little bits around the place and it’s not perfect but it’s better than it was that’s for sure,” said Mr Farquhar.
