Queer Pasifika: The Rebirth of the Cool in St Albans

‘Queer Pasifika: The Rebirth of the Cool’ is an open conversation and performance based event that’s coming to St Albans at the end of this month.

Event organiser, Amao Leota Lu is a Samoan fa’afafine and trans woman of colour who wants to open a conversation within the community to bring a deeper understanding of gender identity, open communication and understanding of her queer brothers and sisters.

“Queer Pasifika is an event that’s tied around the telling or the conversations regarding to the queer community from the Pasifika diaspora, our stories, our experiences and being able to share that within a format such as talanoa,“ Event organiser Amao Leota Lu said.

Talanoa is a cultural Pacific Islander way of having conversations and seeing each other as equals. “We’d like to kind of bring that kind of warmth, empathy and openness to being able to share experiences of our queer Pasifika community,” Amoa said.

The event will consist of a panel discussion from queer Pasifika artists with an injection of performances throughout the night.

“You’re welcome at our table,” says Miss Lu.

The Star Weekly has been told there is also an exciting surprise left to be unveiled on the evening of the event that the community will have to wait and see.

The event is at 33 Princess Street, St Albans on Thursday 21 July 2022 at 6:30pm – 8:00pm.

Proceeds from the event will go to The Tongan Leitis Association
