Albion Primary School will attend next week’s ResourceSmart Schools Awards ceremony at the MCG after being announced as finalists for its sustainability efforts.
They will have the chance to become the Emerging School of the Year after achieving ‘3star status’ in less than two years with the assistance and support of an active community.
With the help of the school’s leaders and physical education teacher Marita Ryan, the school has created a garden that has evolved to having a habitat that attract frogs, birds and bees as well as a chicken coop.
The school has also become environmentally savvy by creating a recycling hub to recycle products for their art room as well as recycling bread clips and other commonly used products.
The school also has a three bin model featuring a compost, landfill and soft plastics bin all in hope of reducing landfill rubbish.
Physical education teacher Marita Ryan said the school has been on board and supported the initiative greatly.
“The school community has provided amazing support for sustainability actions at Albion PS.
“Teachers and students have embraced the new bin systems in their rooms and in the yard and have continued to support new initiatives introduced – Soft plastic collection, house points for bottle caps, bread tags, ring pulls, oral care, old pens, WOW Wednesday and Fruity Friday.
“Student leaders have daily and weekly jobs that they do to ensure our sustainability actions are happening.
“Families have supported students collecting goods at home and bringing them to school. Many families have set up systems at home to replicate the school system.
Ms Ryan said the school board and principal have been strong supporters signing the MoU and setting up sustainability portal online and raising great awareness of the work being done.
School principal Adrienne Williamson congratulated contributors for their efforts.
“We are incredibly proud and look forward to celebrating this achievement at the awards ceremony on 2nd June 2022 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground,” Ms Williamson said.
“Congratulations to Mrs Ryan for all of the work she has and is putting into helping make Albion
Primary School more sustainable.
“To our student leaders who do much work to keep the processes we have put in place going,
thank you and keep up the great work.
“Many thanks to our parents and students who help out in many different ways. Continue this good work.”
