Brimbank council has called for urgent action to better manage the traffic and pedestrian safety along Main Road East and Main Road West in St Albans.
Deputy mayor Thuy Dang moved a notice of motion at council’s meeting on Tuesday, April 19 to write to the Roads and Road Safety Minister Ben Carroll requesting urgent action to implement traffic management measures, including pedestrian safety measures, along Main Road East and Main Road West in St Albans to improve the:
* Safety of motorists and cyclists travelling along the road and turning into and out of side streets; and
* Safety of pedestrians crossing Main Road East and Main Road West at various pedestrian crossing locations.
Councillor Dang said that the Transport Accident Commission had reported 11 fatal accidents on the road since 2016.
Cr Virginia Tachos supported the motion and said the risk for motorists and pedestrian during peak traffic time was “unacceptably high”, especially near the Woolworths shopping centre and the Bowery Theatre.
“There have been so many near misses in front of the high school,” she said.
“The speeds people come over the rail are extremely high for a busy business precinct.
“Let’s hope it gets the prioritisation it needs.”
