Brimbank residents welcome to detox homes

Brimbank residents are encouraged to get rid of toxic household chemicals safely as part of a joint initiative between the Brimbank council and Sustainability Victoria.

The Detox Your Home event is set to take place on Saturday, May 28 at the Brimbank Resource Recovery Centre.

Accepted materials include:

* Detergents, disinfectants and drain cleaners;

* Fire extinguishers;

* Floor care products and waxes;

* Fuels, such as petrol, diesel and kerosene;

* Herbicides and weed killers;

* Insect spray and pesticides;

* Cosmetics;

Albion resident Julia, who lives with her partner and two cats, said she wants to get rid of toxic chemicals such as weed killer, engine oil and old flea bombs.

“I did a bit of cleaning up during lockdown and discovered things in the laundry and shed that I definitely needed to get rid of,” she said.

“I knew it couldn’t go in the regular garbage or down the drain, but when I wasn’t leaving my five kilometre radius I couldn’t do anything about it.

“When I saw that the detox your home event was coming up, I put it straight in the diary.”

The maximum weight for a single container is 20 kilograms or 20 litres.

Residents are advised to drop-off the chemicals in their original containers or disposable packaging with the contains clearly labelled or labelled as ‘unknown’.

The Detox Your Home event is open for drive-in and contactless drop-off at the Brimbank Resource Recovery Centre on Stadium Drive in Keilor Park from 9am until 1pm on Saturday, May 28.
