Braybrook College student’s design work to be feature in Melbourne Museum exhibition

A Braybrook College student has been selected to have his work featured in a Melbourne Museum exhibition.

VCE VET Furnishing student Andre Siakagiannis was selected from 900 VCE and VCE VET design students by a panel of expert educators to have his table design featured in the ‘Top Designs’ exhibition.

Andre was the only VET furnishing student selected for his piece ‘Bedroom Table’.

He said he felt very honoured and grateful to have been given the opportunity for his work to be showcased.

“My family were very excited for me and my achievement of being selected for Top Designs 2022, as well as my friends being very supportive when they found out I was selected,” he said.

Andre’s design features a series of sun rays on the top of the table, which he said acts as a symbol of hope, something that was particularly important for him during lockdown.

“I chose to do the sunray design for my table because I love the sun coming up each day,” he said.

“Particularly in remote learning and lockdown where I felt isolated from not being able to see my friends, family and teachers.

“Although the pandemic has had all its negatives, a lot of positives have come with it due to the fact that when I was under pressure to finish my table at the end I really had to put my head down and get to work.”

While Andre is now studying communication design at University, he said furnishings is something he will always be passionate about.

“I find it extremely cool that you can turn some timber into amazing pieces of furniture of course with the right skills and equipment,” he said.

“I don’t see myself working in the furnishing industry but it can definitely be a hobby for later on in life.”
