Mohsin Abbas studied Human Resources at Swinburne University and completed his masters in 2010. Since then he has worked for Telstra and currently works in risk management for ANZ. Mr Abbas has a passion for cricket where he has been engaging people from the Brimbank community to play the game while running his own cricket brand ’M9ine Cricket’ which he started 2016.
What is your connection to Brimbank and the North West?
Since I migrated to Australia from Pakistan in 2009 I have been living in Brimbank. I have spent my whole 13 years in Australia living in Brimbank and it’s felt like home from the beginning because I was able to meet some fantastic people and build some strong relationships with people in the community. I have been part of Sunshine Heights Cricket Club for almost a decade now and had some wonderful experiences, including winning the A-turf premiership in 2013-14. I also started my own cricket brand ‘M9ine Cricket’ with the vision to make quality cricket equipment available to all types of cricketers at an affordable price.
You have started up several cricket teams within the community, can you tell us more about it?
As a passionate cricket player, brand owner and cricket leader, I have always had a great desire to support cricket in the community. Thankfully, I have been able to support a lot of new and existing cricket community teams in different capacities and have been successfully leading one Pakistani Social Cricket team in the west, ‘Victorian Lions’ with some amazing achievements so far winning several cricket tournaments and being able to engage over 40 people from the community to come out and play.
You have played community cricket since 2009, what impact has it had on your life?
I have been part of community cricket since 2009, which has had a great impact in my personal and professional life. I would say one of the greatest impacts community cricket has had on me is meeting some amazing people and building relationships with different communities and sports people. This has motivated me in life to pursue my passions in cricket and build a cricket brand where I have been able to make friendships with people within the professional industry.
You are going to travel back to Pakistan for the first time in six years to visit your family in mid-March, what are you looking forward to?
The world has seen some drastic changes in the way we operate these days due to Covid-19 and this has limited the opportunities to travel overseas. I am fortunate enough to travel to Pakistan this month and I am looking forward to seeing Australia touring in Pakistan for the first time in 24 years. As everyone knows, Pakistan is a crazy cricket loving nation and Australia will enjoy their stay in Pakistan in front of an excited crowd.
One of my goals would be to encourage young and talented Pakistani people to choose Australia for their next career destination and pursue their aspirations for sport and professional work. I have really worked hard since I moved to Australia and can confidently say that Australia has given me a rewarding career.
