Join Clean Up Australia Day at Kororoit Creek

Friends of Kororoit Creek and Kororoit Creek Klean Up invite the community to show the creek some love by picking up rubbish on Clean Up Australia Day, Sunday, March 6.

Every year, over 60 bags of rubbish are gathered from the clean up.

Friends of Kororoit Creek vice-president Jodie Williams said the event made attendees feel elated after cleaning up nature.

“We all feel like superheroes afterwards,” Ms Williams said.

“I find picking up rubbish meditative, it’s kind of like all you’re thinking about is finding your next bit of rubbish and where you’re putting your feet.”

Prior to the pandemic the event had over 100 people attend every year helping to keep the creek clean for wildlife including platypus.

“This season we are starting to ‘Plant for Platypus’ – creating habitat right towards the edge of the creek,” she said.

The wildlife at the creek has previously attracted local artist, Friends of Kororoit Creek member and amateur photographer Ursula Dutkiewicz who has photographed over 40 different birds on the creek.

The hope is to continue growing and making the creek a great asset to the community.

“We have this beautiful asset that we want to take care of and make it even more beautiful,” she said.

“We have got these beautiful paths but between the paths and creek we want really want that to be a beautiful habitat.”
