Western United coach John Aloisi says he’s very proud of how his team played despite a 1-1 result against Sydney in the A-League men’s season on Saturday night.
The game at New Nestrata Jubilee stadium, marked United’s third away game in a row.
Both teams failed to score within the first half but a goal from United’s Steven Lustica in the 56th minute put them in the lead.
The score was then equalised by Sydney’s Max Burgess in the 65th minute.
United hoped to secure a penalty during injury time but a VAR review dismissed calls that a handball had occurred.
Aloisi said he’s “happy” with the result given the circumstances.
“It’s good that the players have performed really well in some difficult conditions, sometimes we’ve only had three days to back up,” said Aloisi.
“It shows that we have got good character and I’m proud of them.”
Aloisi said it was disappointing not to get the penalty late in the game.
“It didn’t hit the shoulder, it hit the arm and he’s facing the wrong way and he’s stopping our player from actually challenging the ball,” Aloisi told reporters during a press conference.
“Disappointed yes, but we have to get on with it,” said Aloisi.
“It was a good game of football from both sides.”
United remains on top of the ladder, one point clear of Melbourne City.
This week the side is due to face Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday night.
