Drivers are being sought to help get the next generation of drivers behind the driver’s seat.
Brimbank council is seeking volunteer mentors to be part of the Transport Accident Commission (TAC)’s L2P learner driver program.
The program is a community-based program developed to assist eligible young Victorian learner drivers between the ages of 16 and 21 who do not have access to a supervising driver, or an appropriate vehicle gain driving experience required for a probationary license.
Brimbank youth services coordinates the local program.
Before being matched with a volunteer mentor and throughout the course of their L2P driving journey, participating learners have access to several free driving lessons with a professional driving instructor to gain some confidence on the road.
The program focuses on helping young people become safe, confident drivers, as well as providing an opportunity to interact with positive adult role models, gain confidence and move towards social independence.
Mentors go through a training program before hitting the road with a learner driver and have to fit the criteria to be considered.
Mentors need to be available two to three hours a week.
A training session for volunteers is being held on January 29.
