Eureka Climb: St Albans manager takes big steps for charity

Liem Truong-Nguyen has made a career of motivating and challenging others, so it makes sense he takes the same approach himself by aiming to beat personal records as he runs up the Eureka Tower’s 3680 flights of stairs.

In preparation for next month’s Eureka Climb, the 29-year-old health club manager from St Albans is doing leg weights, hill climbs at spots such as Brimbank Park, and running up the 1000 Steps Kokoda Track Memorial Walk at Mt Dandenong.

“I’m always training,” he says. The past two years, Mr Truong-Nguyen has completed the high-rise tower climb with a team of workmates and friends.

Last year, he cracked the event’s top 10.

“This year the goal is to make the top five, and hopefully as a team improve our time.”

Mr Truong-Nguyen finished last year’s climb in 14 minutes. This year he hopes to reach the top in 12.5 minutes.

“Events like fun runs, stair climbs and obstacle courses keep up the motivation and that helps me be even better at my job,” he said.

Money raised during the Eureka Climb will go to Interplast, which links Australian and New Zealand plastic surgeons and health professionals with patients in the Asia-Pacific region who have disabilities such as burn scars.

The event also supports Whitelion, which works with young people disconnected from their communities because of abuse, neglect, drug addiction and poverty.

The Eureka Climb will be held on Sunday, November 16. To support Mr Truong-Nguyen and his team, visit www.eurekaclimb.com.au/registrant/10463
