Females of all ages were back on the cricket field on Sunday as the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association season got underway.
It’s was the women’s competitions that took to the field first with all five women’s social T20 divisions getting underway, with many players taking to the field for the first time.
In the Geoff Shaw Shield, Maribyrnong Park St Marys and Brunswick both got first up wins against Preston Druids and Youlden Parkville respectively.
In division 1, Keilor Park’s match with Pascoe Vale Hadfield was abandoned, with the teams sharing the points.
Aberfeldie and West Coburg were the other winners.
In division 2, Burnside Springs United suffered a 10 run loss to Flemington on a soggy ground.
Flemington batted first making 3-114 from its overs.
Burnside struggled to find the boundary in their innings and fell just short of the target.
Westmeadows opened its account with a win against Oak Park. Playing up two divisions from the grade where they won the premiership last season, the Warriors put in a strong all round performance.
The Warriors made 3-133 before restricting Oak Park to 106.
It was the battle of the Gellibrand teams in the other match. Gellibrand 1 snuck home by four runs against Gellibrand 2.
Keilor got off to a winning start in division 3 against Coburg.
Coburg made a strong total of 1-134 off its 20 overs.
The Blues had little trouble in reaching the target, finishing 2-156. Fiona Goudie finished 58 not out at the top of the order.
Burnside Springs United’s second team lost to Melbourne Deaf 2. Burnside made 1-102, with Melbourne Deaf finishing 1-140 in reply.
Point Cook’s women’s team made their debut on Sunday against Haig Fawkner-East Coburg.
Point Cook made 5-98 from its 20 overs, but it wasn’t enough, with Haig Fawkner-East Coburg making 4-115 in reply.
In division 4, a number of clubs fielded women’s teams for the first time.
Hoppers Crossing-Sanctuary Lakes scored a first up win against Aberfeldie St Johns 2, West Newport-Doutta Stars defeated Flemington Colts and Werribee suffered a first up loss to Maribyrnong Park St Marys.
