The bold choice

For Haylee Bissett, putting words onto paper helps her navigate her thoughts.

The 15-year-old is among a group of young Brimbank residents who have produced the second edition of The Bold Source, a magazine that it led, curated and designed by young people.

The second edition of the bi-annual magazine was released last week to coincide with youth week.

Haylee got involved with the magazine two years ago and has loved the opportunity.

“I had just finished off from another project and I wanted something new to do,” she said.

“I emailed a couple of people through Brimbank Youth Services and found the magazine and I’ve been part of it since.

“This is my first time doing anything like a magazine, it’s such a different experience and I thought I wanted to get out of my comfort zone.

The first edition was based around advocacy, while the latest edition is based around transformation and metamorphosis.

Haylee, who has both written work and photographs in the magazines, said she loved both of the creative outlets.

“I love getting my thoughts down on paper, it makes me feel better about myself.”

Brimbank mayor Ranka Rasic said the magazine gives voices to the municipality’s youngest citizens.

“This is the second issue of The Bold Source and testament to the creativity of young people during extraordinary times,” Cr Rasic said.

“In future years, we will all look back on this publication with pride at the resilience and spirit of young people in Brimbank during challenging times.”
