An Albanvale man who lost his leg in a hit and run accident is looking to a future filled with spending time with his family.

Nick Topia was riding his motorcycle on January 1 when he was hit by a silver SUV performing a U-turn on Station Road, Deer Park.

Nick’s daughter, Tiffany, said earlier this year that he was dragged 100 metres down the road, causing extensive leg injuries.

The grandfather of nine spent time in an induced coma and had dozens of operations. A decision was later made to amputate his lower leg.

The 55-year-old has spent the last 10 weeks undergoing rehabilitation at Epworth Hawthorn, working with a physiotherapist, occupational therapist and rehabilitation doctor to improve his movement before he is fitted with a prosthetic leg.

His rehabilitation includes a gym session in the morning and working with a physiotherapist in the afternoon.

Mr Topia said gym sessions have been with several other amputees, who understand what he is going through.

“There’s a few amputees in here so we all talk,” Mr Topia said.

“It’s pretty good as you can help one another. I am just new to this, so it’s good to talk to someone else who has been through it.”

Despite his injury, Mr Topia remains positive about his future, looking forward to being able to spend time again with his three daughters and nine grandchildren.

“I just want to move forward and be a happy person, like I am. I am always a happy person.”

Epworth rehabilitation and mental health executive general manager Jo Goodridge says Mr Topia is among Victoria’s “hidden” road toll.

‘Each year, more than 7000 people are seriously injured on Victoria’s roads,” Ms Goodridge said.

“More than 200 of those undergo rehabilitation at Epworth for injuries, including multiple fractures, nerve damage and internal injuries.”

“It is incredibly rewarding to see this recovery. Nicolas will soon return to his family and his loved ones and he can live a fulfilled life, despite his accident.”

Police are still investigating the incident.

Earlier this year they released images of the SUV, possibly a Ford Territory, which investigators believe may have had two female occupants at the time of the incident.

Police said the occupants of the car failed to stop after the collision and were last seen heading north on Station Road.
