Soccer

Melton Phoenix progressed to the fourth round of the FFA Cup with an extra-time victory against local rival Keilor last week. With both sides set to compete in state league 4 in the coming soccer season, it was clear there wasn’t much separating the pair for the first 45 minutes at MacPherson Park in Melton. After going into the half-time break at 0-0, there was still no end to the deadlock when play resumed. In front of their home fans, it was the Phoenix that found a way through its opposition’s defence first, scoring a winner to seal the 1-0 victory. Melton will take on last year’s top Victorian FFA Cup side, the Melbourne Knights, in the next round.

FFA Cup

The results were a lot better for other Brimbank-based teams competing in the FFA Cup last week. Sydenham Park showed it had lost none of its goal-kicking prowess on the way to a smashing 6-0 victory against the Old Melburnians. There were also plenty of goals for Westgate, which enjoyed a 5-1 win against Hampton Park United. Westgate takes on Geelong in the second round, while Sydenham Park will meet Pascoe Vale.
