Brimbank’s active COVID-19 case tally has rocketed past 300.
An additional 67 cases were added on Wednesday, bringing the municipality’s total to 358.
Brimbank now has the second highest number of active cases within the state, second only to Wyndham (412).
Two major outbreaks including 54 cases linked to Ardeer based aged care facility Estia Health, and 47 cases linked to JBS abattoir in Brooklyn have both continued to grow.
From 11.59pm tonight, people living in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire will be required to wear a face covering when leaving home.
Premier Daniel Andrews said data shows Victorians are going out while sick and failing to isolate while awaiting the results of tests.
He said 3400 out of 3810 cases failed to properly isolate between July 7 and 21.
“I’m very unhappy and sad to report that nearly 9 in 10 case … did not self isolate between when they felt sick and when they got tested,” he said.
“That means people have felt unwell and just gone about their business. They have gone out shopping. They have gone to work.
“Unless we have people who get tested staying at home and isolating until they get their results, then we will not see these numbers come down.
“And a six-week shutdown will not be for six weeks. It will run for much longer than that.”
