The number of COVID-19 cases within Brimbank jumped by seven overnight as Victoria experienced its highest number of new cases in more than a month.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services, there were seven new cases recorded within the municipality yesterday, taking the number to 41.
Across the state there were 22 new cases overnight, 19 of which were linked to a Brooklyn meatworks.
Cedar Meats at 690 Geelong Road has been named as the meatworks with the cluster, which the state government has not confirmed.
Fifteen people linked to the meatworks had earlier been diagnosed, with more than 300 staff undergoing tests.
The factory has now been linked to 34 cases of coronavirus.
Victoria’s chief health officer Brett Sutton said it was a reminder that the fight against the virus was far from over.
“Today’s increase in cases illustrates once again that while we have been flattening the curve, our battle against COVID-19 is far from over,” professor Sutton said.
“Victorians have done a remarkable job so far sticking to the coronavirus restrictions and staying at home has saved lives. But now is not the time for complacency.”
