The banks of the Kororoit Creek have swelled with walkers, cyclists and people with their four-legged friends as they turn to nature during COVID-19 restrictions.
Now the group that has spent years caring for the creek is calling on newcomers to help it protect the waterway and surrounds.
Friends of Kororoit Creek president Jessica Gerger said it was important the area was respected.
“When we are down working on the creek we see many more people walking, dog walking, cycling, taking photographs, bird watching. It is wonderful to see,“ she said.
“It almost feels as if the creek paths have become the main walkways of Brimbank.“
“People are generally respecting the creek – but unfortunately there are huge amounts of dog poo everywhere,“ she said.
“People might not realise that dog poo is very bad for creek health.“
The group has had to cancel its working bees and planting events because of restrictions placed on public gatherings during the coronavirus crisis, and Ms Gerger is hoping everyone could pitch in and help share the load.
She hoped the increased traffic might also result in more people joining the group.
“We would love for people to join us in any way, shape or form,“ she said.
“Nature is helping everyone get through this and we need more volunteers to help look after nature when we go back to normal.
“Lots of people have expressed an interest in helping, which is terrific.
