Western Health is on the hunt for suitable volunteers to help run four of its hospitals.
Volunteers are being sought for the Joan Kirner Womens and Children’s Hospital, Sunshine Hospital and the Footscray and Williamston hospitals.
Western Health acting manager community engagement and volunteers Karin Haufe-Stellini said the organisation is looking forward to adding to the more than 650 volunteers currently working with it.
“You’re supporting your community hospital,” she said.
“You’ll be supporting the running of the hospital and all the staff that make that happen.
“You might also bring a smile to a patient or member of public who really needs it.”
She said there are a number of roles available.
“We have roles in maternity, social support, way finding, checking people in for appointments, newspaper trolleys, meal assistance and more.
“We just ask that those who do volunteer can commit to two-four hours a week for a 12-month period.”
A typical volunteer role entails one shift per week, or fortnight, of approximately three hours duration.
All volunteers are required to consent to police and referee checks.
They must also provide a working with children check and proof of immunisation.
The Western Health volunteer recruitment program re-opened on February 3.
Ms Haufe-Stellini said the process was simple.
“Once someone has expressed interest, we contact them and arrange a time to come in to discuss the position,” she said.
“We then outline the program and make sure the person is suitable.
“If they’re suitable we organise a police check and they have to bring proof of immunisation and children.
“From there they fill out the application, we do a referee check, and finally, we introduce them to area that suits the hospital’s needs.”
