It’s well known that many men shy away from talking about their health issues, but for Mohammed Toaha, changing the face of men’s health is a matter of life and death, literally.
The Victoria University staff member has grown his facial hair for the past five ‘Movembers’ and says his father’s recent diabetes, strokes and kidney problems have motivated him to get men talking more about their health.
Movember men commit their top lip and chin for 30 days to raise funds for, and awareness of, men’s health, particularly prostate and testicular cancers.
“It’s just a fun, light-hearted event but, talking seriously, men tend to hide away from their health and pretend they’re invincible, so they don’t go to the doctors or regularly screen for diseases,” the VU team captain said.
Mr Toaha’s team raised $1800 last year. He and the five other team members, including Sean Garimort, have so far raised more than $400 this year.
“It gives you licence to do what you like with your facial hair and is a great initiative to get people talking,” Mr Toaha said.
The 30-day charity initiative began in Melbourne in 2003, and is now a leading non-government funder of research into men’s health around the world. There are about four million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas in 21 countries taking part in the Movember campaign.
