Green Gully draws on its fighting spirit

A 10-man Green Gully fought back from two goals down in the second half to draw 3-3 with Port Melbourne Sharks in a thriller in the National Premier League at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday.

Port Melbourne opened the scoring with a goal from Brody Taylor.

You can always count on Alex Salmon to get Green Gully back in the game.

The league’s equal most prolific striker, with 17 goals, equalised for the Cavaliers just before half-time.

The second half seemed to be turning into a nightmare for Green Gully.

Port Melbourne skipper Michael Eagar and Yuta Konagaya scored consecutive goals for the visitors.

Green Gully went down to 10 men after a red card was shown to Matthew Breeze but Green Gully refused to give in.

The Cavaliers began their comeback when Jonathan Bounas played a one-two with Jeremy Walker and powered his shot low and hard inside the far post.

In the dying minutes, Salmon’s strike from the edge of the area made its way through a forest of legs and into the back of the net.

Melbourne Knights are licking their wounds after a 2-0 loss to a new-look Dandenong City away on Friday night.

Brendon Santalab was superb for City with a double.

In NPL Women’s, Calder United handed out a 9-0 drubbing of Geelong Galaxy.

Catherine Zimmerman fired in a hat-trick for United, while Angela Beard and Aleks Sinclair scored doubles.

Calder will tackle Bayside United away at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex on Saturday.

In Football Victoria men’s state league 1, Sydenham Park has taken over top spot after a 1-0 win over Whittlesea United at Keilor Lodge Reserve.

Juso Julardzija scored the game’s only goal for the Reds in the first half.

North Sunshine Eagles battered Keilor Park 4-1 to consolidate third place.

Nick Epifano scored a double for North Sunshine.

Westgate moved to within a point of top spot in men’s state league 2 after a 3-0 road win over Albion Rovers.
