Green Gully comes crashing down

Green Gully is the latest victim of an in-form ladder leader Avondale in the National Premier League.

The Cavaliers were on the back foot for most of the game in a 5-2 loss at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday.

Former Cavs player Liam Boland, the leading scorer in the league, fired a double for Avondale.

Andy Brennan and Matthew Fletcher were the Cavs goalscorers.

The Stephen Downes-coached Cavaliers have tumbled to seventh in the standings.

They will be looking to halt the slide against South Melbourne at John Cain Memorial Park on Sunday at 3pm.

In NPL women’s, Calder United survived a scare to beat Heidelberg United 3-2 at Olympic Village on Sunday.

Calder’s flawless record appeared under threat after its two-goal lead was wiped out in the second half.

However, Calder found a way to get all three points and maintain its spot on the top of the ladder, with Catherine Zimmerman scoring the winner in the 81st minute. Zimmerman’s two goals has taken her to first place in the golden boot chart with 10 goals in the opening five rounds. Calder’s next test will come against Southern United at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve at 3pm on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Panagiotis Kone is eager to rip into the new career challenge that awaits his arrival at Western United.

Kone was the first signature secured by the A-League expansion team and he was immediately tagged with marquee status because of his elite talent.

A star attacking midfielder with 28 caps for Greece and a host of playing experience in Europe, Kone has experienced just about all that he can at the top level.
