Delahey hit-and-run victim Jasmine Vuong wakes, talks

A teenage girl left fighting for her life after a hit-and-run that left her friend dead at Delahey last month is showing the first signs of recovery.

Jasmine Vuong’s condition was last week downgraded from critical to serious after she opened her eyes and spoke briefly to her family, who have been holding a bedside vigil at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

The 17-year-old has undergone surgery for a fractured skull and is also suffering from a broken arm and hip, and extensive grazing.

Jasmine and her friend, Anthony Nguyen, also 17, were struck by an SUV while crossing Taylors Road, near Braeswood Road, about 11.30pm on January 27.

Mr Nguyen, who sustained head injuries from the accident, died the following night at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Police determined a light-coloured Nissan Dualis SUV, manufactured between October 2007 and January 2010, was responsible, and a 33-year-old Hillside man was arrested on January 29.

He was released without charge pending further forensic testing. Clair White, a Victoria Police spokeswoman, said the investigation was “ongoing”.
