February 12, 1975

Melbourne University is investigating a fire that destroyed crops and endangered six houses and two shops in Fitzgerald Road, West Sunshine, last month.

Officials from the university’s School of Agriculture and Forestry asked for the investigation following a statement from Imperial Chemical Industries, which said the fire started at the university’s Mount Derrimut field station. University staff have denied the allegations.

Sunshine council’s bold plan to transform the heart of the city with a commercial, community and cultural centre would attract “knockers”, the council was told at its meeting last week.

Cr Don McKay said some people would say that council was mad and incapable of bringing such a giant project to fruition. But they would be proved wrong.

February 8, 1995

Three local politicians are gearing up to fight for lower rail and bus fares for the people of the St Albans and Deer Park areas.

The difference in fares between Albion, the last station in zone one, and St Albans, in zone two – a distance of only 4km or two stations – is 70 cents for a daily ticket, $12.40 for a weekly and $460 for a yearly ticket. The same differences also apply to travellers on the Deer Park line.

Heavy rain and torrential winds wreaked havoc across Brimbank last week as Melbourne’s summer came to a crashing halt.

Streets and houses were flooded and creeks overflowed last Wednesday and Thursday.

All across Brimbank, trees and fences came down as State Emergency Service volunteers answered well over 100 emergency calls from residents.
