Bowls Victoria’s metropolitan pennant: Deer Park beats Whittlesea

Deer Park maintained its outstanding home record in Bowls Victoria’s metropolitan pennant competition on Saturday.

The Parkers are unbeaten at home, with Whittlesea the latest side to feel the pressure.

After a competitive start, Deer Park streaked away to win 16 (78)-2 (60).

Deer Park president Ray Franksen was impressed with the evenness of his side’s performance against what he described as quality opposition.

“They [Whittlesea] were in the top four going into the game so it was very good to get over them,” he said.

“It was pretty even until probably the last half a dozen ends. We got away a little bit after that and we’ve made a bit of a habit of doing so.

“We had three rinks up and one rink down. If someone has an off day, the other rinks will carry them.”

Deer Park is now 13-2 for the 2014-15 season and sits on top of the division 1 table.

The club’s only losses came against Ferntree Gully in round eight and Croydon in round 11.

“I think we really don’t like getting beaten,” Franksen said.

“We’re in top spot and we really want to stay there. We want to be the top side at the end of the year.”

With just three rounds until the finals, Deer Park will have the perfect dress rehearsal for the finals this week when it takes on second-placed Mitcham.

The two sides last met in a home match for Deer Park in round seven, when the Parkers won by 15 shots.

“We’re very much looking forward to that one,” Franksen said.

“Without a doubt, it’s going to be like a final and I imagine they’ll be treating it the same way”

It wasn’t just Deer Park’s top side which had reason to celebrate on Saturday.

All four of the club’s pennant sides enjoyed wins and have all qualified for finals.
