Kings Park Primary School pupils were tickled orange last week during an early Harmony Day celebration.
Physical education teacher Tony Kurvink said pupils across all year levels donned orange and decorated the school hall in the fruity hue for last Monday’s school assembly.
“We acknowledge all the different cultural backgrounds all our students come from,” he said.
Staff got in on the fun with a special morning tea, with teachers bringing traditional dishes from their cultures for colleagues to try.
Harmony Day is held every year on March 21 to coincide with the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. It’s also a celebration of Australia’s cultural diversity.
According to the Harmony Day website, about 45 per cent of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was.
Apart from English, the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Italian, Arabic, Cantonese, Greek, Vietnamese, Filipino, Spanish and Hindi.
