The Brimbank council is calling for a container deposit scheme to be introduced in Victoria.
Cr Kim Thien Truong tabled a motion calling for the scheme at last week’s meeting, saying it would encourage recycling in the community.
She said it would also help reduce the number of containers going to landfill.
Container deposit schemes allow consumers to return eligible, empty beverage containers to their place of purchase and receive a refund for each container.
The council will now write to the Victorian Minister for Energy Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio requesting the scheme be introduced.
Cr Lucinda Congreve said it was a worthwhile concept.
“What a terrific way to encourage people to recycle,” she said.
“I remember doing something similar when I was a child and I think it makes a lot of sense.”
Earlier this year the council unveiled a new waste, recycling and litter strategy.
The strategy has a heavy focus on reducing the amount of waste going into landfill and emphasises the need to educate people on waste reduction.
It also identifies illegal rubbish dumping and litter as a significant issue and cost to Brimbank.
