Brimbank’s youth will have a stronger voice with the establishment of the Brimbank Youth Council.
The establishment of the youth council was a key recommendation of the council’s new Youth Participation and Engagement Model.
Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said it was vital that youth were given a say in decision-making about the municipality.
“Our youth are the future of Brimbank – we want to make sure that their voices are considered,” Cr Giudice said.
“Young people have so much to contribute to our community, but we need to give them the appropriate time, resources and support so that they can feel comfortable in what are traditionally ‘formal or adult’ environments,” Cr Giudice said.
The model also includes establishing sub-committees and four “local young communities” groups – based in each Brimbank council ward.
The groups will include opportunities to build skills and support employment and education pathways for young people.
Brimbank Young Citizens Jury member Jacob Tiauli said the model would empower younger residents to ensure the council considered their needs and views. “Each section of the model is an open door to everyone – allowing all voices to be heard,” he said.
