Belinda Fitzpatrick learnt a valuable lesson during a first aid training session: she could be the difference to saving her child’s life in an emergency.
The Melton mother travelled to Broadmeadows earlier this year to attend a Tiny Hearts First Aid session, learning how to respond to a range of medical situations, including choking, burns and drowning.
She said the 40-minute drive was “more than worth the journey”.
“I think the most valuable thing I learnt was that I could be the difference to my child’s life,” Ms Fitzpatrick said.
“Until the session, I think I would have thought twice about whether I could actually administer first aid that could save his life.”
The North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network will give 1500 parents and caregivers the chance to attend the Tiny Hearts First Aid sessions in Melton and Sunshine for free. Sessions will be available in Mandarin.
Network’s chief executive, Adjunct Associate Professor Christopher Carter, said giving parents the skills to help keep their children safe was vital.
“An effective health system is not just about doctors or hospitals,” he said. “We can all play an active role in making our community a healthier and safer place to live.”
