You don’t need to book in, but be sure to attend a special fundraising event in Hoppers Crossing this weekend.
The Werribee Ladies for Kids Auxiliary for the Royal Children’s Hospital will host a secondhand book sale on Saturday and Sunday.
The sale will include fiction, non-fiction, children’s books and DVDs, along with handcrafted items made by auxiliary members, such as crocheted blankets, patchwork rugs and babies and children’s clothing.
Auxiliary members Heather Brett and Mabel Cornwall said they hoped to attract a big crowd to the sale.
Mrs Brett said she had been collecting books to sell for about 12 months, with some donated by deceased estates and also by the Heathglen Retirement Village.
Mrs Cornwall said the book sale would be a “one-off” event but would be similar to the monthly fundraising stalls which the auxiliary holds at the RCH and shopping centre markets.
Within the past three years, the auxiliary has raised more than $150,000 for the Royal Children’s Hospital, including $52,630 for an adolescent music therapy program, $50,000 for an ultrasound machine and $49,789 for an autism treatment study.
Mrs Brett likened volunteering for the auxiliary to “a full-time job”.
“Unless I’m asleep I’m sewing, knitting, crocheting or running stalls,” she said.
The book sale will be held at 64 Evrah Drive in Hoppers Crossing, starting at 8am on Saturday, August 18 and again on Sunday 19. The books will be $2 each or six for $10.
