Calder United maintains the pressure

Calder United is keeping ladder leader South Melbourne honest at the top of the Women’s National Premier League soccer ladder.

The trouble for United is that South just keeps winning, so it is finding it hard to bridge the four-point gap between the sides, although United does have a game in hand.

Calder kept up the pressure with a 5-0 win over Senior NTC at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

It was another goal feast for Calder following its 10 goals in a win over Southern United a week earlier.

Angie Beard, Catherine Zimmerman, Alycia Eicke and Polly Doran all scored for Calder in the win over Senior NTC.

Calder is on the road this Sunday, facing Bayside United at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex.

In the men’s NPL, Melbourne Knights edged out Green Gully Cavaliers 1-0 at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday night.

The Knights claimed their first victory in more than a month courtesy of a goal from the penalty spot in the 18th minute from Tomislav Uskok.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Cavaliers, who are on a three-game losing streak.

In NPL 2 west, Sunshine George Cross played out a pulsating 3-3 draw with Werribee City away at Galvin Park.

The Georgies, five points in arrears at the foot of the table, have plenty of work to do to avoid relegation.

St Albans Saints had a vital 1-0 win over North Geelong Warriors at Churchill Reserve to maintain their promotion push.

The Saints’ winning goal came in the 72nd minute through an own goal.

In men’s state league 1, Keilor Park moved to within four points of top side Geelong, which lost at the weekend.

The Parkers had a 2-1 win over in-form Yarraville Glory at McIvor Reserve on Saturday.

Michele-Emanuele Crazia and James Johnston scored for the Parkers.

It was a rough weekend for Sydenham Park, which lost 4-2 to FC Clifton Hill, and North Sunshine Eagles, who went down 1-0 to Preston Lions.
