It’s all about the trees

Thousands of new trees are set to take root this weekend, with National Tree Day activities across Brimbank.

There are a number of plantings across Brimbank on Sunday, July 29. One of the biggest will be in Sunshine, with the Friends of Kororoit Creek planning for more than 200 volunteers to plant 4000 trees and shrubs.

FOKC president Jess Gerger said it was easily the biggest event the group ran for the year.

“It’s always a huge day,” Ms Gerger said.

“It’s a chance for us to really connect with the community and refresh relationships with people that we might only see once a year. But it also means we can get some really big projects done.”

While the weekend’s events will give the environment a big boost, Ms Gerger said it would be great to maintain the momentum.

“We do get really good numbers at all our other events during the year, but we’d always love to see more people coming down more often,” she said.

“It would be great to expand and see more greenery going up in our suburbs to complement the work being done along the creek.”

The FOKC will have music, food, children’s activities and crafts at its site at 27 Fraser Street, Sunshine.

Brimbank council will also be helping run a planting day at 151 Green Gully Road, Keilor Downs.
