Footy dreams kick on

Two Brimbank girls are preparing to show their football skills on the national stage.

Taylors Hill 14-year-old Montana Ham and Caroline Springs 13-year-old Charlotte Baskaran have made the School Sports Victoria under-15 girls team for national championships in Adelaide – and they are excited.

Montana said the pair had missed out last year, so being selected this year was “so good”.

Charlotte said they were enjoying the process of learning how to play with their new teammates.

“Adelaide will be tough – it’s five games in seven days, but I’m really looking forward to it,” she said. “I think we can win.”

Charlotte is in the athletics program at Maribyrnong Secondary College, while Montana qualified for the state team from Overnewton Anglican Community College.

Montana is in her ninth year of football at Keilor Football Club, while Charlotte has only been playing seriously at Aberfeldie for the past three years.

With the introduction of the AFLW in the past two years, both girls are dreaming of being drafted and forging a career in the national competition.

“That would be great,” Montana said. “If I could play for Richmond or the Bulldogs, that’d be pretty cool.”

The SSV national championships will be in Adelaide from July 21 to 28.
