Brimbank council is preparing to sell a property to recover unpaid rates and charges.
During its May meeting, the council passed a report by acting director Shane Marr that recommends the council start the sale process.
The property’s location has been kept confidential.
But the council said nobody was living at the property and it was in a derelict state.
Cr Lucinda Congreve said that while selling the property was a drastic measure, the action was necessary.
“Having seen the property in question, I’m sure the community surrounding it will be glad to see us taking action,” she said.
“Not only is it a drain on council resources, but it’s also a significant impost on the surrounding community.”
The council has made numerous attempts over several years to get the property’s accounts into order, but they have all been unsuccessful.
Mr Marr said that under section 181 of the Local Government Act, the council has the power to sell a property, but must follow a strict process.
“There’s a clear process council needs to follow to do this and this report is the beginning of that process,” he said.
