Volunteer call for breakfast duty

A local food relief charity is seeking volunteers to help Brimbank children start the day off on a healthy note.

Foodbank Victoria will be holding information sessions in St Albans and Sunshine as they continue to search for more volunteers for nine Brimbank schools taking part in the School Breakfast Club program.

The program aims to provide children with a healthy breakfast, with one in seven children arriving at school having not eaten breakfast.

The School Breakfast Clubs program provides 50,000 healthy breakfasts each week in 500 Victorian primary schools.

Foodbank Victoria chief executive Dave McNamara said it was a great opportunity for people to support their local community.

“Unfortunately not all kids get to start the day with breakfast at home,” Mr McNamara said. “School Breakfast Clubs are providing more than just a nutritious breakfast. The end result is improved concentration, behaviour and attendance and these are great outcomes for the whole school community.

“Volunteers play an integral role and we want to help schools in Brimbank recruit enough volunteers to allow them to run their Breakfast Clubs five days a week.”

Information sessions will be held on March 21 (7.45-9am at St Albans Community Centre, 309C Main Road East, St Albans) and March 22 (7.45-9am at Visy Cares Hub, 80B Harvester Road, Sunshine)
