Performing on stage in front of a crowd may sound like hell to some people, but for Mia Haber it’s what she has wanted to do for a long time.
The Caroline Chisholm Catholic College student won her way through to the finals of the Fast Track Talent singing competition last weekend, and while it was her first shot at a solo performance she is loving the ride so far.
“I’ve been singing since I can remember, but I’ve only been having lessons for about two-and-a-half years,” she said.
“To perform in public was really good, and a great experience.”
Mia credits her parents as her biggest music influence. Her father is a clarinet player and big fan of Elvis, while she’s watched her mother sing karaoke to the songs of the ’70s and ’80s many times.
After her singing teacher recommended she try out for the Fast Track competition, Mia, who normally performs in an R’n’B band at school, stepped out for her first solo performance.
She took on the daunting Leonard Cohen classic Hallelujah in the heats of the competition, and impressed enough to make it through to the finals.
“It went pretty well, so I was confident with the song,” Mia said.
“There was a lot of cheering from the crowd.
“I was pretty shocked when I heard I made it through.
“I’ve got a few songs in mind for the finals, but I’m just really looking forward to the day. I would love to make it into the music industry and make a career out of this.”
Mia will perform in the Fast Track Talent Singing Showcase finals on March 18.
