Sunshine United’s win has finals flavour

Sunshine United is heading to the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north-west division finals after a gallant last-round win over Haig Fawkner at Selwyn Park on Saturday.

The Tigers posted a meagre 153, but their bowlers came up trumps on the second day to roll Haig Fawkner for 141 and seal a finals berth.

Harvinder Singh produced a colossal performance with the ball for the Tigers, taking 3-31 off 26 overs.

The Tigers will battle it out with Altona North in a semi-final for the right to play in this season’s grand final.

In north A1, Caroline Springs toppled Sunshine in a high-scoring game at Town Centre Reserve, with Sunshine tumbling to fourth.

The Crows would have fancied their chance to defend 267, but Caroline Springs stormed to victory on the back of 119 from Gayashan Weerasekara.

Sunshine will face East Coburg in the semi-finals, while Caroline Springs will host Moonee Valley.

In north-west B1, Deer Park kept hold of top spot for the finals, but the real action was in the bottom half of the top four where Sunshine Heights broke in on the final day.

The Heights recorded a stunning outright win over Maribyrnong Park  St Mary’s to claim a finals position.

It was business as usual for Deer Park, which thrashed Sunshine YCW by 138 runs on first innings, leaving YCW with the wooden spoon.

In west A1, Grand United had a disappointing final round loss to Seabrook, missing out on its chance to become minor premiers.

The Gorillas will still be in the thick of the finals action though, having qualified in second place to face Williamstown Congs in a semi-final.
