Northern Knights get first up win

Northern Knights started the TAC Cup girl’s season with a win, but it was a tough weekend for both the Calder Cannons and Western Jets.

The Knights kicked off their season against Dandenong Stingrays on Saturday and were able to stand strong late to seal the win.

The Knights led all day but were challenged by the Stingrays who reduced the margin to three points at the last break.

The Knights responded kicking four goals in six minutes in the final term to get the win, 8.7 (55)-3.2 (20)

Alyssa Bannan kicked three goals for the Knights and led the way in the final quarter.

Abigail Bennett was named the Knights best, along with Gabrielle Newton and Britney Gutknecht.

The Western Jets were unable to match it with the Bendigo Pioneers on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers opened up a goal lead at the first break and the margin was seven points the main break.

The Pioneers stepped it up in the second half, kicking five goals to one, to get the win 8.12 (60)-3.5 (23).

Cleo Saxon-Jones, Isabella Grant and Sharnie Whiting kicked the goals for the Jets, while Isabelle Pritchard.

The Cannons suffered their first ever loss of the TAC Cup girl’s competition, losing to the Murray Bushrangers on Sunday.

The Bushrangers had a lot of the scoring early could have quite easily led by most than 12 points at quarter time.

They extended the lead in the second quarter to 17 points at the main break.

The Bushrangers didn’t allow the Cannons to get back into the game, extending the margin in both quarters to win, 10.13 (73)-4.3 (27).

It was all single goal kickers for the Cannons, with skipper Madison Prespakis named the best in the loss.
