Caroline Springs to host tournament

Caroline Springs Hockey Club is hosting its first-ever tournament – and it’s all for a good cause.

The club, in its second year, will give back to the community by running the Beyondblue Cup on Saturday.

The round-robin competition will feature three open-age mixed teams from 11.30am.

Caroline Springs president Kathy Jungfer said the club wanted to get behind the Beyondblue cause and promote hockey as a sport of inclusiveness.

“This idea was brought to our board by a member who lost a former teammate,” Jungfer said.

“We also have club members who suffer from depression.

“This initiative is our small way of helping our own members and all the hockey community through raising awareness and much-needed funds for the charity, Beyondblue.

“We feel strongly about this as a club.”

Jungfer said the club would look at making the tournament a regular event to promote the cause in the coming years.

Hockey Victoria, which has done a lot of work to raise money for and awareness of Beyondblue, has also come on board in helping the Caroline Springs day come to fruition.

“It’s a major thing for us to host something like this,” Jungfer said.

“This is the first year we have joined with Hockey Victoria to run this initiative and hope to be able to grow this event over the next three to four years.

“We’ve kept it to a limited number of teams to try and maximise game time with having only one pitch.

“There will be a barbecue and a social day for anyone who wants to come down and watch.”

The tournament will be held at Melton Hockey Fields, 132 Bridge Road, Atherston Estate, Melton South.
